The Destruction of the Jaguar: Poems from the Books of Chilam Balam
Published in Paperback by City Lights Books (December, 1987)
Author: Christopher Sawyer-Laucanno
Average review score:

The Chilam Balam series
The Polpo Vuh is also written by the Maya of Ancient America. It predates the Chilam Balam series by at least 4,000 years. This is written as a correction to the previous reviewers notes on the Chilam Balam. It is important to purchase these books while they are available to us, the American Aboriginal from any part of the Americas while there is peace. None of the California Public librarys carry any of our ancient texts as they still marginalize our needs. You can always get Ancient Classical Greek works in public librarys across the country and anything from across the ocean but our own American original pieces are not made available to us still. So, if you can please purchase these books, and the Popol Vuh and donate them to your public librarys while we still have a chance to recover from the on going conquest.

Early Nasca Needlework
Published in Hardcover by Laurence King Pub (April, 1997)
Author: Alan R. Sawyer
Average review score:

Fantastic ancient needlework from Nasca, Peru
Alan Sawyer has a beautifully presented book here. It's not heavy on text, but that is partly due to the fact that as the author states, there have been virtually no proper excavations of Nasca burials to base information on.

What you get here is litrely pages of gorgeous photographs of existing early nasca needlework that the author was able to locate in various collections. He has concentrated on pieces with a provence in the nasca or ica valleys.

This book is illuminating, but to get the most out if it you should look at a book that has been written on the earlier, related Paracas style in order to really see the differences between the two styles, as they are often confused in non-specialist books.

Beautiful, colorful, inspiring and educational. This book is a must for anybody interested in ancient peruvian textiles or arts or who just wants to see rare textiles that are as good as anything else produced anywhere in the world over the last 2000 years.

The Fifth Gospel : Isaiah in the History of Christianity
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (May, 1996)
Author: John F. A. Sawyer
Average review score:

Superb exploration of history of interpretation.
The history of a text's interpretation (or its reception) is at long last being taken seriously as a vital aspect of interpreting it. Sawyer here delivers on his long-awaited promise to pursue such a line of enquiry with respect to the book of Isaiah. As he says, much that is of great interest to readers of Isaiah lies not in reconstructed philology or historical setting, but in its appropriation in music, art, and the general mythology of Christianity (e.g. the ox and the ass of the nativity scene; the suffering servant in the passion...). We can only hope that this might signal the beginning of the end of dry-as-dust and theologically thin commentaries on biblical books, and the beginning of a whole new approach to dialoging with ancient texts. Groundbreaking.

Freedom Calls : Journey of a Slave Girl
Published in Hardcover by White Mane Publishing Co. (January, 2001)
Author: Kem Knapp Sawyer
Average review score:

Based on True Events!
Louisa, 15, is a slave in 1848 working on a plantation in Washington D.C. She is a slave on loan and the teen makes a journey daily back and forth from the mistresses house and the Senator's house. On day she overhears a man talking to her neighbor about a ship that will bring her to freedom. With the assistance of Abby, her abolitionist friend she is able to escape from the plantation and get on board the Pearl, a ship which will carry her and others to freedom. However, within hours the ship is captured and Louisa's hopes of freedom seem done. However strong-willed Louisa isn't going to let that happen. She manages to escape again and once again runs to her best friend Abby for help. However Abby has got her own problems too. Her father, Gamaliel Bailey, a son of a Methodist minister writes a anti-slavery newspaper and the irratated citizens are blaming him for getting the slavery issue brought up again. Hiding in Abby's room for weeks Louisa finally decides to take a daring journey to freedom. Will she make it? What will her new life be like?

Though this book focuses on Louisa it also details Abby's lifestyle as the daugter of an abolitionist.
Based on the true story of the capture of the Pearl in which 76 slaves attempted to escape to freedom Freedom Calls : Journey of a Slave Girl truly gives you new insight into the Civil times and the internal and external conflicts of that time. It also teaches that friendship is a loving bond. You can tell this book was well researched as the details were very descriptive. Though Louisa is fictional she could very well be real. This is a great book for researching that time period! I recommend all people to read this gripping new book, especially girls and fans of Dear America!
